So my husband's uncle talked about this place and we didn't imagine how wonderful it is, so we went there last year, arriving late around 15:00h because we never wake up early, and we got to see 80% of the park.
So I reccomend you go early, before lunch time, and make a picnic. Of course near the park is a Tesco, so you can buy something there - everybody does this.
It is a giant, very beautiful and well conserved park. However it is 1:00 by tube from central London - you can see a station called Kew Gardens here: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/standard-tube-map.pdf
