People were on balconies having tea and pie during the evening or drinking wine...<span style="color: black; direction: ltr; font-family: 'Segoe UI'; white-space: pre-wrap;">This place has a very interesting historical background:</span><br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia</div> The route of <a class="mw-redirect" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Strand,_London" title="The Strand, London">the Strand</a> on the southern boundary of what was to become Covent Garden was used during the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Britain" title="Roman Britain">Roman period</a> as part of a route to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silchester" title="Silchester">Silchester</a>, known as "Iter VII" on the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonine_Itinerary" title="Antonine Itinerary">Antonine Itinerary</a>.<sup class="reference" id="cite_ref-4"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covent_Garden#cite_note-4"><span>[</span>5<span>]</span></a></sup><sup class="reference" id="cite_ref-5"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covent_Garden#cite_note-5"><span>[</span>6<span>]</span></a></sup> Excavations in 2006 at <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Martin-in-the-Fields" title="St Martin-in-the-Fields">St Martin-in-the-Fields</a> revealed a Roman grave, suggesting the site had sacred significance.<sup class="reference" id="cite_ref-6"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covent_Garden#cite_note-6"><span>[</span>7<span>]</span></a></sup> The area to the north of the Strand was long thought to have remained as unsettled fields until the 16th century, but theories by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Vince" title="Alan Vince">Alan Vince</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Biddle" title="Martin Biddle">Martin Biddle</a> that there had been an <a class="mw-redirect" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Saxon" title="Anglo-Saxon">Anglo-Saxon</a> settlement to the west of the old Roman town of <a class="mw-redirect" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Londinium" title="Londinium">Londinium</a> were borne out by excavations in 1985 and 2005. These revealed Covent Garden as the centre of a trading town called <a class="mw-redirect" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lundenwic" title="Lundenwic">Lundenwic</a>, developed around 600 AD,<sup class="reference" id="cite_ref-7"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covent_Garden#cite_note-7"><span>[</span>8<span>]</span></a></sup> which stretched from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trafalgar_Square" title="Trafalgar Square">Trafalgar Square</a> to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aldwych" title="Aldwych">Aldwych</a>.<sup class="reference" id="cite_ref-Lund_1-1"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covent_Garden#cite_note-Lund-1"><span>[</span>2<span>]</span></a></sup> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_the_Great" title="Alfred the Great">Alfred the Great</a> gradually shifted the settlement into the old Roman town of Londinium from around 886 AD onwards, leaving no mark of the old town, and the site returned to fields.<sup class="reference" id="cite_ref-Clark_8-0"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covent_Garden#cite_note-Clark-8"><span>[</span>9<span>]</span></a></sup><br /> Around 1200 the first mention of an abbey garden appears in a document mentioning a walled garden owned by the <a class="mw-redirect" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benedictine_monk" title="Benedictine monk">Benedictine monks</a> of the Abbey of <a class="mw-redirect" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Peter,_Westminster" title="St. Peter, Westminster">St. Peter, Westminster</a>. A later document, dated between 1250 and 1283, refers to "the garden of the Abbot and Convent of Westminster".<sup class="reference" id="cite_ref-Burford1_9-0"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covent_Garden#cite_note-Burford1-9"><span>[</span>10<span>]</span></a></sup> By the 13th century this had become a 40-acre (16 ha) quadrangle of mixed orchard, meadow, pasture and arable land, lying between modern-day St. Martin's Lane and Drury Lane, and Floral Street and Maiden Lane.<sup class="reference" id="cite_ref-10"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covent_Garden#cite_note-10"><span>[</span>11<span>]</span></a></sup> The use of the name "Covent"—an Anglo-French term for a religious community, equivalent to "monastery" or "convent"<sup class="reference" id="cite_ref-11"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covent_Garden#cite_note-11"><span>[</span>12<span>]</span></a></sup>—appears in a document in 1515, when the Abbey, which had been letting out parcels of land along the north side of the Strand for inns and market gardens, granted a lease of the walled garden, referring to it as "a garden called Covent Garden". Sorry to leave you my dear blog. :P<br />I will talk first about Piccadilly Street and later about this tea store Fortnum & Mason.<br />OK, I watched in Brasil a news item about this store and I thought it was very fancy, so I dedicated yesterday for a walk in Piccadilly. <br /> I started by the Green Park station then in my way was a gallery of Vintage jewelry, and a lot of jewelry stores (See the amazing pictures). After that I found the Royal Academy of Arts with 2 expositions. A paid one about Johan Zofany for 10£ and a free one about "LithORRgraphy" by Chris Orr Ra. Finaly I arrived in front of <a href="http://www.fortnumandmason.com/">FORTNUM & MANSION</a>. In the news they said that it is a furnisher of tea for the Queen.<br /> The employees wear tuxedos sooooooo ... <br />Now the store is decorated for the Queen Jubilee. I bought 2 kinds of tea, Marrocan Mint and Apple. I spent 11,00£. I really reccomend this store.<br />After that they had some restaurants and St James Church where I found a fair with some antiquities and I bought type letters Art deco style. K and G, initials of my name and my husband's name. I paid 10 £, I think. In Notthing Hill I can find them cheap. Because they are all together.<br /> Then in the second day, if you like shopping, you should go to Oxford Street. In my vision this is the most difficult area for them to repair, because this is being worked on since last year. But it doesn't make a difference, the street is always full anyway.The repairing won't upset you.<br /> <br /> If you go you can start with Primark, and after that visit Selfridges <a href="http://www.selfridges.com/" target="_blank">http://www.selfridges.com/</a> they have the best M.A.C store in all London, then visit all the stores inside (They have all the big brands). Afterwards, you should go to Boots with 3 floors, (I recomend you eat in Yo Sushi) If you like kitchen things I recomend John Lewis. <br /> They have a nice Forever 21 store, Uniqlo too. For Acessorize and Top Shop I reccomend Westfield Stratford Mall. <br /> <br /> Then pay atention near Nike, you will cross Regent Street where is Liberty (this is a peculiar store, it is a departament store with different things, yes they can offer different goods and with great quality <a href="http://www.liberty.co.uk/" target="_blank">http://www.liberty.co.uk/</a>) and you will cross Broad Street where is the Apple store.<br /> If you like to walk a lot like me, you will find the Sports Direct store (buy sports products here) and a lot of other stores!
